Welcome to the third and final part of our three part series on Plantar Fasciitis, also known as Plantar Heel Pain, today's focus - the treatment options for Plantar Fasciitis!

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that can cause significant pain and discomfort. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, becomes irritated. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options available to help manage the symptoms and improve the condition.

Rest and Ice

One of the simplest and most effective treatments for plantar fasciitis is rest and ice. A study published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research found that rest and ice were effective in reducing pain and improving function in individuals with plantar fasciitis. This treatment involves avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain, and applying ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day.

Stretching and Gentle Exercise

Another important component of treating plantar fasciitis is stretching and exercise. According to a study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, a structured exercise program that includes stretching, strengthening, and balance exercises can improve pain, function, and quality of life in individuals with plantar fasciitis. Some effective exercises for plantar fasciitis include calf stretches, plantar fascia stretches, and heel raises.

Orthotics

Orthotics, such as shoe inserts or custom-made orthotic devices, can also be effective in treating plantar fasciitis. A study published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association found that custom-made foot orthoses were effective in reducing pain and improving function in individuals with plantar fasciitis. These devices can help redistribute pressure on the foot and provide support to the plantar fascia, reducing strain on the affected area.

Strengthening

In some cases, strengthening may be recommended to help treat plantar fasciitis. A study published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association found that strengthening was effective in reducing pain and improving function in individuals with plantar fasciitis.

If you're an active person, you've probably heard of stress fractures or stress response injuries. These are small cracks or bruises that occur in the bones of the feet due to repeated pressure and impact from activities like running or jumping. While they might seem like minor injuries, they can be extremely painful and take a long time to heal. One of the best ways to prevent and manage these types of injuries is through load management. Load Management is an incredibly important part of the advice that our Ballarat Podiatrists give out to injured athletes.
