Ingrown toenails can be a painful and bothersome condition that affects many individuals. If you've ever experienced the discomfort of an ingrown toenail, then you know what we mean.

Read on to understand more about your in-grown toenail, and how the team at Ballarat Podiatry can help.

What are Ingrown Toenails?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin instead of over it. This condition most commonly affects the big toe but can occur in any toenail. Ingrown toenails can result from various factors, including improper nail trimming, wearing tight footwear, trauma to the toe, or genetics (we're looking at you, Dad).

Key Symptoms of Ingrown Toenails:

  1. Pain and tenderness: The primary symptom of an ingrown toenail is pain along the side of the affected nail. The area may feel tender to the touch or when pressure is applied.
  2. Redness and swelling: Ingrown toenails often cause localized inflammation. The surrounding skin may appear red, swollen, or feel warm to the touch.
  3. Skin overgrowth or infection: If left untreated, ingrown toenails can lead to overgrowth of skin tissue or infection. You may notice the presence of excess skin or the development of pus around the affected area.
  4. Difficulty wearing shoes: Ingrown toenails can make wearing shoes uncomfortable, especially if they put pressure on the affected toe. The pain may worsen with movement or when engaging in activities that involve the toes, such as walking or running.

Tips for Relief from Ingrown Toenails:

  1. Soak your feet: Soaking your feet in warm water with salt can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Do this for 15-20 minutes a few times a day.
  2. Proper nail care: Trim your toenails straight across and avoid rounding the corners. Be cautious not to cut them too short. If you are unsure about proper nail trimming techniques, consult one of our Ballarat podiatrists for guidance.
  3. Avoid self-treatment: It's important not to attempt self-treatment by forcefully digging out or cutting the ingrown nail. This can lead to further complications and worsen the situation. Seek professional care from the Ballarat Podiatry team for proper treatment and advice.

If you experience persistent pain, worsening symptoms, signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), or if you have diabetes or poor circulation, it is crucial to come and see the team at Ballarat Podiatry.

If you're an active person, you've probably heard of stress fractures or stress response injuries. These are small cracks or bruises that occur in the bones of the feet due to repeated pressure and impact from activities like running or jumping. While they might seem like minor injuries, they can be extremely painful and take a long time to heal. One of the best ways to prevent and manage these types of injuries is through load management. Load Management is an incredibly important part of the advice that our Ballarat Podiatrists give out to injured athletes.
