Shockwave Therapy for Heel Pain

Shockwave Therapy has been used in elite sport since the early 2000s as a way to give immediate pain relief and promote long-term healing. Ballarat Podiatry is proud to be one of the few clinics in Ballarat to have a Shockwave Therapy machine meaning we can bring the treatment of elite athletes to the Ballarat community.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave is the use of pressure waves to treat connective tissue pathologies such as the Achilles tendon or the plantar fascia. The acoustic pressure waves in Shockwave Therapy applied to the injured area can result in short-term effects that can result in pain relief, alongside long-term effects that promote healing.

How Can Shockwave Therapy Help?

The mechanism of action of those single acoustic pressure waves applied in Shockwave Therapy can:

  • Reduce the sensation of chronic pain
  • Block neurogenic inflammation
  • Activate mesenchymal stem cells (bone cells)
  • Release growth factors
  • Improve blood circulation in the treated tissue
  • Decreases substance P production (substance P is associated with pain and neurogenic inflammation)

What We Can Do for You?

In simple terms, Shockwave Therapy can cause a decline in neurogenic inflammation which can lead to increased healing, growth factors and stem cells in the treated tissue as well as providing immediate pain relief.
